There is nothing quite like the sight of a Blue Tit darting through the garden to tell you that spring has finally arrived. This piece captures a moment of quiet stillness on our Buddleia bush just as it was beginning to wake up and show its first signs of life.
The Story Behind the Drawing
Like many of my pieces, this one started with a lucky moment captured by my husband, David. He spotted this little Blue Tit resting momentarily on the Buddleia. I was struck by the way the bird's bright, energetic colours stood out against the soft, emerging green of the spring buds.
It's a scene I see often from my window, but drawing it allowed me to really appreciate the intricate patterns of its feathers.
My Creative Process
I used my favourite Faber-Castell Polychromos coloured pencils on smooth Bristol board for this study. The challenge was capturing the specific "electric" blue of the crown while keeping the breast feathers looking soft and downy.
Every time I look at this drawing, it reminds me of the garden coming back to life. I hope it brings that same sense of spring-time optimism into your home.
A Note on Colour: I take great care to photograph my work accurately. However, please be aware that because every computer screen and mobile device is calibrated differently, the colours you see on your screen may vary slightly from the physical print or drawing.
