One of the greatest joys of living in Suffolk is the wildlife that visits our garden. This Chiffchaff print is incredibly special to me because it's a direct result of a quiet moment at home and a wonderful collaboration with my husband, David.
The Story Behind the Drawing
I've always been captivated by the energetic little birds that flit through our trees, but they rarely stay still long enough for a portrait! David managed to capture a beautiful, sharp photograph of this Chiffchaff as it paused on a fuchsia in our garden.
As soon as I saw this photo, I knew I had to draw it. I wanted to capture that inquisitive look in its eye when it appeared to be watching us.
My Creative Process
To bring this little visitor to life, I used my Faber-Castell Polychromos coloured pencils on smooth Bristol board. I spend days building up the layers of olive and yellow tones to get the plumage just right. For me, it's all about the details: although I tried to be a little bit more relaxed and not overwhelm the picture with too much fine detail this time.
